How to maximize your JFK layover in one hour:

As a frequent traveler with layovers in JFK, I’ve learned a few tricks to make the most of my one-hour layovers. Here are some of my recommendations:

A. Pre-trip planning: Before your flight, research the attractions and activities near JFK that you want to see. Make a list of the things you’d like to do and see, and map out your route. This will save you time and ensure you don’t miss your connecting flight.

B. Recommended services: JFK offers a variety of services to make your layover more comfortable and enjoyable. I recommend using the airport’s luggage storage service to store your bags while you explore the city. If you need to freshen up, JFK also has shower facilities available.

C. Time-saving suggestions: To save time, take public transportation instead of a taxi or ride-share service. The AirTrain is a convenient and affordable option that can take you to popular destinations like Jamaica Station and Howard Beach.

D. Airport security tips: To avoid delays at airport security, make sure you have all necessary documents ready and easily accessible. This includes your boarding pass, ID, and any necessary visas or travel documents. Also, be sure to pack any liquids or gels in a clear, plastic bag to expedite the screening process.

By following these tips, you can maximize your layover and see some of the best attractions the city has to offer in just one hour.

Things to see and do around JFK during your layover

When I have a layover at JFK, I always try to make the most of my time by exploring the surrounding areas. One of my favorite places to visit is the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which is just a short taxi ride away from the airport. It’s a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature, with miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing areas, and even a visitor center.

If you’re feeling hungry, I highly recommend heading to the nearby neighborhood of Howard Beach, where you can find some of the best Italian food in the city. One of my favorite spots is Gino’s Restaurant, which has been serving up classic Italian dishes since 1962. Their pizza is a must-try, and their pasta dishes are always cooked to perfection.

For a more cultural experience, you can hop on the AirTrain and head to the nearby neighborhood of Astoria, which is home to a large Greek community. There, you can sample some of the best Greek food in the city at places like Taverna Kyclades or Artopolis Bakery.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to see some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, you can take a taxi to the nearby neighborhood of Long Island City and visit the Pepsi-Cola sign and the famous 5 Pointz graffiti art museum. You can even snap some photos with the Manhattan skyline in the background.

Overall, there are so many things to see and do around JFK during a layover, and with some careful planning and time management, you can easily maximize your one hour and create some unforgettable memories.

Personal Experiences

A. Exploring the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
During one of my layovers, I decided to visit the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which is a 10-minute ride from JFK Airport. The refuge is a serene oasis where I was able to spot various species of birds, including the American bald eagle. It was a calming experience that made me forget about the hustle and bustle of the airport.

B. Visiting the Resorts World Casino
If you’re feeling lucky, a quick trip to the Resorts World Casino, located just minutes from JFK, is a great option. I spent some time there and enjoyed playing slot machines and trying my luck at the roulette table. Even if you’re not a big gambler, it’s still a fun way to pass the time during a layover.

C. Grabbing a Bite to Eat

There are plenty of options for food around JFK, but one of my favorites is the famous New York pizza. I took a quick ride to a nearby pizzeria and enjoyed a delicious slice. It was the perfect way to get a taste of the city’s cuisine without spending too much time away from the airport.

D. Shopping at the Green Acres Mall

If you have a layover that’s longer than an hour, the Green Acres Mall is a great place to visit. It’s a 15-minute ride from JFK and has over 150 stores to shop at. During my visit, I was able to score some great deals at my favorite stores.
